Information & Advice for the foam party operator

Health and Safety - The Machines [2]

When handling the concentrate ensure the operative wears protective gloves and eye protection and that they have help if lifting heavy drums. Measure the concentrate accurately, don’t guess! Calculate the exact concentration - too little and the foam will be poor, too much and you can cause eye and skin irritation.

Ensure you carry a copy of the C.O.S.H.H. and/or the MSDS with you for the foam product you are using.

Never use washing-up liquid in a foam machine or any product other than approved foam concentrate. If filling large 1000 litre containers remember these weigh over 1 tonne when full so ensure the surface they are on can take the weight - this is particularly important if these are on a balcony or mezzanine. Ensure the foam machine and pump are fitted with a 30mA circuit breaker to avoid potential electric shock.

Do not point the machines directly into peoples faces as high volumes of wet foam can cause drowning. Always ensure the foam falls onto heads from above. Being completely under the foam can by very claustrophobic and cause panic attacks particularly if the audience are surging forward to be under the foam causing those already under it to be crushed and with now physical or visible way out. Using the machines in multiple short bursts rather than one, long, continual burst will avoid this situation. Do not allow the foam to exceed chest height.

Do not add anything to the foam that is not approved for the purpose, for example; dyes, fragrances or flavourings.

Once again; Do not allow the general public to use the machines.
